SAM.gov is the primary publication system for federal contract opportunities. A notice record combines agency ownership, notice type, classification, eligibility, place of performance, dates, contacts, links, and sometimes attachments. Those fields help you find a record; the notice and attachments tell you how to respond.
What an opportunity record contains
Common fields include the title, notice identifier, solicitation number, agency hierarchy, posted date, response deadline, NAICS code, product service code, set-aside, place of performance, and public contact. “Not stated” is a meaningful outcome when the source omits a field.
Notice type changes the next action
A pre-solicitation warns that a solicitation is expected. Sources sought and requests for information collect market input. A combined synopsis/solicitation may contain the synopsis and response instructions in one notice. An award notice reports an outcome. Read the notice type before treating a search result as open work.
The API provides the latest active version
The public Get Opportunities API requires an API key, date parameters, and pagination. Its public documentation states that it provides the latest active version. That is why a monitoring product must store its own observed snapshots to identify later field or attachment changes.
Attachments can control the response
The summary page is rarely the whole requirement. Attachments may contain the statement of work, clauses, pricing schedule, drawings, wage determinations, and submission instructions. GovBidStream checks link status, but a bidder must review the source files and applicable restrictions.
Freshness is a visible product field
“Last checked” should describe an actual successful observation. When a connector fails, the record should become stale instead of silently looking current. A stale page may still help discovery, but it cannot support a current-deadline claim.
